WEEK IN REVIEW
Over the course of this past week, players and teams competed in ESL, the ESL Monthly Finals, vVv Gaming, the RLC Pro Draft, and IRCL. With no games of the International kind, the question of who is the best team in the world is still left unanswered, but at least we were able to enjoy a wealth of NA competitive action. The big winners this week were Gird Your Loins in ESL Cup #19 (a thrown together team of Graham, Yilmaz, & M1k3Rules of EU’s FlipSid3 Tactics) and NOT in the ESL Monthly Finals. In the Rocket League Central Pro Draft, Kronovi, Turtle, & Huskih reigned supreme, while in the IRCL Voltage, Kings of Urban, Hello?, and SnK Apollo all came up as the winners over the past week.
UPSET OF THE WEEK
- NOT defeats iBUYPOWER COSMIC (4-1) in the ESL Monthly Finals.
ROCKET LEAGUE ESPORTS NEWS / RUMORS
- Digital & Espeon of Hello? have changed their name to Double Tap and are rumored to be picking up a 3rd to replace SynGG.
#1 iBUYPOWER Cosmic: Kronovi / Sadjunior / Gibbs / KyleMasc | —
Cosmic had never lost with their full roster in an ESL event until this past Saturday where they lost to NOT (4-1) in the Championship match of the ESL Monthly Finals. Yes, the map was Wasteland and that may or may not have affected the teams, but at the end of the day a loss is a loss. Over the past 4 months, Cosmic has reigned supreme and widely been uncontested, but now it seems that levels are starting to draw a little closer. As significant of a win as that is for NOT, it’s not enough to knock Cosmic down a peg just yet. They’ve done enough, for the time being, to stay at #1 but they have lost a bit of their invulnerable stigma and will need to go on a tear to get that back. -CloudFuel
#2 Kings of Urban: Fireburner / Jacob / Moses | —
KoU comes out this week with a solid first place finish in the ESL Go4 Cup, however it would have been much nicer for us if we saw them play against NOT or iBP as well. Granted, given their pristine history against NOT, near wins over iBP, and a good set of games against Gird you Loins, Hello, and The Flying Kappas they have the odds just barely for them over NOT. With the upcoming RLC Pro League and perhaps more tournaments in the near future, we are sure to see more epic battles with the best of the best playing for the top spot in the rankings! -Dirkened
#3 NOT: Klassux / Low5ive / ? | —
NOT had a solid Monthly Final taking out cosmic 4-1 to take the ESL title this month. ESL has had 4 different monthly champions in the four months it has been around! NOT did not play in ESL where they could of shown that maybe they have grown enough to beat Kings of Urban. They did play Voltage however in IRCL and lost 3-2. Losing to on the border Top 10 teams will not help NOT move up just yet but their time is coming if they continue their good play. -Gibbs
#4 Nexus: Lachinio / Vafele / Pluto | Up 1
Thanksgiving was just a few weeks back and one thing I’m still thankful for is that we get to see Nexus (Untethered) playing more often and more consistently! Once hailed as the twin titans of NA Rocket League (alongside Cosmic), it’s great to see them back in the mix again. This past week, they beat Orange Creamsicle (3-1) and then lost a close one against NOT (2-3) in the ESL Monthly Finals. If they can keep competing more often, I’d expect to see them start winning more often than not and possibly even challenge for their old spot (#2) or better yet go for the gold (#1). -CloudFuel
#5 Orange Creamsicle: Edwind / Quinn Lobdell / Gambit | Down 1
It’s three weeks in since Gambit apparently start playing as their third, however from what I’ve seen there hasn’t actually been a Gambit playing for them since that first week. So I’m starting to wonder about their third and OC’s consistency coming into the RLC Pro League. Maybe with the introduction of a more formally run league we’ll see OC in full force again, but until then I can only see these guys trending downwards as recently their only results have been loses against NOT and nXs. -Dirkened
#6 SnK Apollo: Huskih / fl0w / Azi / PrimeThunder / Lars | —
SnK Apollo was a bit quiet this week with only 2 matches, but they were pretty solid ones for the most part. They beat Fusion Corps Blue in IRCL (3-1) and lost a very close game against NOT (2-3) in the ESL Monthly Finals. SnK and NOT seem to be going round and round lately with close wins and losses, but until SnK becomes more consistent with the wins and/or gets an opportunity to play and beat nXs, iBPC, or OC then there’s really not much chance of them moving up. -CloudFuel
#7 Jorellis Goodies: Corelli22 / jodari / magicgoodies | —
Jorellis Goodies haven’t left quite the mark that they did not too long ago, but with a M1k3rules fueled Gird your Loins just barely stopping them short and a near win over iBP in the Monthly Finals, JG are still showing us they’re in it to become the best. Personally I see JG as nearly tied with SnK and the only separation here is SnK’s history. Should JG pick up their tempo again and work on their team mechanics, there’s no reason they wouldn’t be able to take down the teams above them, even the likes of iBP Cosmic. However, we’ll really just have to see how these guys fare when they compete in the RLC Pro League qualifiers! -Dirkened
#8 Moon Men: Amoney / ENIGMA_PLEASE / Kerupt | Up 1
Moon Men are very strange to me. Its almost like they came from the moon. They seem to take out a solid team in ESL each week but then falter right after to a lesser team. This week IRCL didn’t go their way by losing to Voltage but Moon Men have at least consistently taken out good teams in ESL even if they falter right after. They have shown they can play with some of the better teams they just have to show that against the lesser teams everytime to move up further. -Gibbs
#9 Mad Magic 2.0: SoonTM / SteveGatesRL / zOctanEz | Down 2
Mad Magic 2.0 have slowed down after their great start as a new team. Two weeks in a row they have had an early exit in ESL thanks to the Moon Men. They played Cosmic close in the Monthly but besides that and not being in he IRCL Invite hurts their chances to make any splashes this week. If they can avoid Moon Men, who seem to have their number, maybe they can put in another solid run in ESL. -Gibbs
#9 Dragonfly: Eveh / Warep / CalamitÉ | New
Dragonfly is a team that has been on my radar for quite a while now and occasionally would show up as a team to watch, but they’ve been progressing nicely over the last 2 weeks and are trending upwards among the NA teams. I personally had them ranked a slight bit lower than my committee mates, but it’s really splitting hairs at this point because all of those teams were so close in comparison. With Dragonfly, though, they took the BK Randys (a squad who had “super-sub” Pluto from Nexus filling in) to 5 games. They also beat SnK Apollo (3-1) a little over a week ago, but have had some questionable losses that keep them from jumping up any higher this week. They’re right on the edge and will need to continue improving and taking down higher ranked teams if they want to keep climbing the ranks.
