WEEK IN REVIEW
Over the past week, we’ve seen teams battle in 3 major tournaments (RGN, ESL, & Rocket Royale). RGN has finished their 3v3 & 1v1 tournaments, but rumor is that they have something big planned to start some time next month and run through the beginning of next year. In the ESL Monthly Finals, Kings of Urban emerged victorious but fell to iBUYPOWER Cosmic in the Rocket Royale Qualifiers who managed to earn the #4 spot in the event on Sunday. Titanium Ricochet also qualified for Rocket Royale with a 3-2 win over the BK Randys and a 3-2 win over SnK Apollo, but were quickly dismissed by SK Gaming and Dot Dot Dot. Wrapping up the week, Orange Creamsicle took home top honors with an impressive run in NA ESL Cup #15.
ROCKET LEAGUE ESPORTS NEWS/RUMORS
- Nexus eSports have picked up Untethered (previously with Vanquished Gaming).
- The IRCL began competition this week with their Invite and Open Leagues.
- Kings of Urban have picked up Cazaz911/Moses (previously of Titanium Ricochet).
- Titanium Ricochet has disbanded and Klassux/Low5ive have teamed up to create a new squad.
#1 iBUYPOWER Cosmic: Kronovi / Sadjunior / Gibbs / KyleMasc | —
Cosmic proves week after week that they deserve to be on top of the list, and this week is no different. There were a few close series against KoU and Flash Flood that nearly fell out of their favor, which has shown that Cosmic still needs to have their starting line up in order to be #1 and that they can’t be complacent. We can’t forget though, whether it comes to reverse sweeps or coming in clutch in game 5’s, Cosmic is unrivaled in making sure they win, no matter how unlikely it seems. -Dirkened
#2 Untethered: Lachinio / Vafele / Pluto | —
Untethered played quite a bit more this week than they have in the past few weeks and did enough to show that they are still a force to be reckoned with. In the RGN 3v3 they lost a close 5-game set to iBP Cosmic and a 4-game set to TiRi, but then in the ESL Monthly Finals managed to beat both Double Tap & Flash Flood with a sub in place. They ultimately lost to Kings of Urban in the Finals, but took it to 6 games while doing so. While they’re still considered an elite team, their place at 2nd is far from set, at least in my book. Many of the teams just below them have been steadily improving and are just looking for an opportunity to knock them down a peg or two. -CloudFuel
#3 Titanium Ricochet: Klassux / Cazaz911 / WaZe_One87 | Up 1
Titanium Ricochet, as we know them, is no more. Moses/Ezekiel/Cazaz (Might I suggest Gabriel, Adam, or Noah for the next name?), has joined with Kings of Urban and WaZe_One87 has moved on to seek another team as well. It’s rather fitting then, that the last week of this power trio being together they went out on their highest note. This week they managed to put together a string of solid wins against SnK Apollo (twice), Untethered, and the BK Randys. Looking towards the future, though, it appears that Klassux and Low5ive are going to now be teaming up with a new name, a new logo, but an unclear future. As a new team, they will have to rely completely on how they fare this week as they won’t get any credit from TiRi’s recent history. They’ll need to hit the ground running, though, if they want to earn a spot on next week’s Power Rankings. -CloudFuel
#4 Kings of Urban: Fireburner / Jacob / Moses | Up 2
Kings of Urban have finally chosen their 3rd player in Cazaz/Moses. (Why can’t people choose one name?) But anyway they gave iBP Cosmic a run for their money in the qualifiers before getting reverse swept by them. They made it to the Semi’s of ESL without using Moses. These guys are very talented and could give Untethered and Cosmic a run for their money for the top spot. I can’t wait to see how these guys gel in a few weeks. These RR Qualifiers is a place where they can show their worth. -Gibbs
#5 SnK Apollo: Huskih / Azi / PrimeThunder / Lars | Down 2
SnK continues to be one of my favorite teams to watch and with a strong week like they had, it’s really hard to not place them up further. Now that Cosmic doesn’t have to qualify into RR I’d bet that we will see SnK make their way into the Sunday tournament so they can get the vital experience against the world’s top teams again. Because SnK has stayed so consistent with their starting lineup, I believe that they will continue to get better and better with each week and eventually rival the EU teams in RR. -Dirkened
#6 Orange Creamsicle: Edwind / Quinn Lobdell / ? | Up 2
After not seeing anything from Orange Creamsicle in a while, they burst back on to the scene this past week in a big way to win the NA ESL Cup #15. They took out up and coming squads Moon Men, Failure To Launch, Salvo Gaming, and The Ghost Boosters with relative ease. They also blanked the BK Randys and Kings of Urban rather quickly enroute to their spot in the Finals. There they faced off against a variation of SnK Apollo with Azi, Sinta Claws, & Espeon (from team Hello?) and ended up winning 4-3. Considering their flakiness over the past month or so, it’s hard to bump them up too highly on this list but at the same time, a performance like they had on Sunday can’t go unnoticed. Rumors are that Rizzo will be joining as their 3rd, but they’ve also used ElmirFudd and SteveGatesRL, so there’s still no definitive answer at 3rd for them yet. -CloudFuel
#7 Flash Flood: Gimlax / Mister Justice / Turtle | Up 1
Flash Flood moves up one position in the rankings since last week, and it is well deserved. It’s usually hard to base a team’s performances when they have a sub, and it’s rare that these subs actually increase the team’s performance, but Flash Flood managed to nearly pull out an upset against iBP Cosmic and did upset TiRi who is ranked #2 this week. I’m very curious to see how FF will react to their success with Jayyyrah and whether or not he will decide to stay in the competitive scene to spice things up a bit. I’m keeping my eye on these guys. -Dirkened
#8 Double Tap: Jamesbot / fl0w / Sir PancakeIII | Down 3
Double Tap has been super consistent in the 6-10 range where most teams fluctuate a ton. They only played one match this weekend but that one match was taking Kings of Urban to 5 games, an impressive feat. Their consistency gives them the edge over most teams down here. I could see them jumping up soon if they can get a few upsets under their belt. They are very close to that tipping point its just a matter of time. -Gibbs
#9 Jorellis Goodies: Corelli22 / jodari / magicgoodies | New
Who? I asked myself that question when I saw how well they were doing in this past Sunday’s ESL Cup. Then I saw who the team consisted of and it completely made sense. I’ve known of Corelli22 for quite some time now and have heard nothing but great things about both jodari and magicgoodies, so a team filled with those 3 just seems destined to accomplish quite a bit. In their first ESL showing, they managed to take out Stratos Red, New To This, and Fusion Corps Blue (who, unfortunately, find themselves just outside of the Top 10 again this week). They also took the SnK Apollo sub-experiment (Azi, Sinta, & Espeon) to 5 games (the same group that were 1 game away from winning the entire event). Not a bad run for their first time. Now, however, they’ll have their mettle tested this week to determine if this was a fluke or if they can sustain this level of competitive play. -CloudFuel
#10 BK Randys: Air194 / Evo / Reagan / craid18 / GriffinD_Mighty | Down 3
BK Randy’s sneak in to the final spot mostly because they took Titanium Ricochet to 5 games in the Rocket Royale qualifiers. They did not have an impressive showing in ESL with their only notable game being an 0-3 sweep to Creamsicle. But to make the top 10 you don’t always have to win you just need to take games off the big boys and the BK’s did that again this week so they sneak back onto the charts. -Gibbs
