The Improvement of CLG

IbuyBLOG-JiJi1

Communication is one of the most important components for any team competing, whether it’s traditional sports or eSports. All teams have ways in which they quickly and efficiently convey messages to each other. There are drastic differences between a team that has excellent communication and a team that is only sub-par.

For instance, with Korean teams, most of them barely have any hesitation for any team play making (they…just do it!). Even if sometimes the organized plays of the Koreans do not always have the preferred results, you can still tell that they all have the same goal in mind and are highly coordinated in trying to accomplish it. Where as often in NA, team members will often have different goals in mind, or even if their goals are unified, their paths for trying to accomplish these goals might be consistent.

For NA, C9 clearly has their communication down pretty well. As it shows in their superb game flow, map movement and objective control. I suspect it is a direct result of clear-cut, efficient team communication. Even if sometimes things might have not gone their way due to perhaps mechanical errors or plain misplays, it is still clear from their map movement and coordination in taking objectives that most of them have the same goal in mind.

The plain skill gap between top NA teams and Korean teams is not too much apart, if at all. However what primarily sets the two regions apart is communication and strategy. Of course execution matters too, except execution only comes after clear communication of set strategies.

CLG historically have actually always been HORRIBLE with communication, since day one. Every player that has been on CLG always had their own, different ways of communicating (or not communicating). Not to mention there were major issues of personality clashes, which causes even more trouble on top of ridiculously bad communication. CLG has always been trying to improve this, but only recently have we finally found some real progress.

On the current CLG, we are fortunate to have no personality issues. Communication issues are actually legitimately being improved on and fixed at an acceptable rate. We have been finding ways to improve on communication. One good example is the communication of the shot caller in regards to making calls. Often in the past calls were made in a suggestive rather than an authoritative manner. Such as “we should do this…” or “we can do that…” We’ve now implemented a system where we come up with a set bunch of words for each message that can be said to each other. This allows each player to understand easily without any confusion. It also allows for each message to come across to be in the best acceptable way, so it doesn’t come out wrong. CLG still is an emotional team. We’re now making a greater effort to better capitalize on the benefits of this, as well as reduce the downsides of this as well.

TLDR: Communication OP, KR > NA, CLG working on what needs to be worked on the most at an acceptable rate.
